Munters Selma, Texas

The Munters production site in Selma, Texas, is part of Munters Data Center Technologies (DCT), manufacturing Computer Room Air Handlers (CRAHs) and Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs) for data center cooling applications.

Operations in Selma, Texas

Selma is one of the U.S. production locations for Munters Data Center Technologies and represents an important part of the company’s growing manufacturing footprint for data center cooling solutions.

Established in 1991, the Selma facility has evolved significantly—from producing commercial dehumidifiers to manufacturing large-scale, energy-efficient cooling equipment for the rapidly expanding data center industry. The facility also supports the sustainability ambitions of Munters, with 100% of its electricity sourced from renewable energy.

The approximately 134,000-square-foot facility currently manufactures CRAH and CDU units.

Data center equipment requires production at significant scale while managing hundreds of complex and fast-moving components. To meet the demands of this growing market, the Selma facility has fundamentally transformed its operational approach, focusing on production efficiency, standardization, employee development, and continuous improvement.

Continuous Improvement Through Lean Manufacturing

One of the most significant developments in Selma’s evolution has been the implementation of Lean Manufacturing principles.

Beginning in 2022, the facility partnered with the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) to provide employees with comprehensive Lean Six Sigma training. This initiative helped transform the factory floor by focusing on waste elimination, process optimization, and improved material flow.

By applying Lean methodologies, the Selma team mapped high-volume logistics and production processes to ensure that the components required for data center units moved efficiently through the facility while reducing bottlenecks and unnecessary delays.

Lean Manufacturing has also empowered employees to identify inefficiencies, reduce downtime, improve workplace organization, and make more effective use of the facility’s available space..

Developing Employee Capability

Employee development and leadership capability are important components of Selma’s approach to continuous improvement.

Through its partnership with UTSA, DCT employees have received Lean Six Sigma training at the Yellow Belt, Green Belt, and Black Belt levels. By 2026, 172 employees had completed Lean Six Sigma training, including 43 Green Belt and 13 Black Belt certifications.

Munters Selma also provides in-house leadership development and training. 100% of supervisors, team leaders, and managers have received leadership training, supporting the development of a common approach to leadership and continuous improvement across the organization.

Employees are also encouraged to participate in a variety of development and engagement opportunities, including the Safety Committee, First Responders program, Women and Allies Employee Resource Group, Green Team, survey focus groups, and other employee-led initiatives.

Standardizing Work

As part of the Lean transformation, Munters Selma has transitioned from relying primarily on informal knowledge sharing to more structured and standardized methods of knowledge management.

Work-in-process training, playbooks, and standardized work instructions are now incorporated throughout the production line. Manufacturing engineers and production employees collaborate to translate engineering drawings and technical requirements into clear, standardized production instructions that operators can follow throughout the manufacturing process.

This approach helps reduce reliance on individual or informal knowledge, creates greater consistency in production, and supports the transfer of knowledge across teams.

Employee-Led Continuous Improvement

Continuous improvement is embedded in the day-to-day activities of the Selma facility. Employees are encouraged to identify opportunities to improve processes, eliminate waste, and strengthen the overall production system.

One example is the Kaizen Newspaper, a program that provides employees with a structured way to identify and address potential improvements. Initiatives have included workplace organization, equipment maintenance, and warehouse optimization.

Another initiative, Quality in Action, engages employees in identifying opportunities for improvement and conducting root-cause analysis to address process issues and prevent recurrence.

This approach is based on viewing problems and process deviations as opportunities to strengthen the production system while simultaneously developing employees’ problem-solving capabilities and organizational knowledge.

A Production Site Transforming the Culture

The Selma facility combines U.S.-based production of CRAH and CDU units with an ongoing Lean Manufacturing program focused on improving production flow, standardizing processes, and developing employee capabilities.

The transformation of the Selma facility demonstrates how Lean principles, employee development, standardized work, and employee-led improvement can work together to support a changing manufacturing environment.

The work continues as the Selma team further develops its production system, strengthens its capabilities, and expands its role within the broader Munters Data Center Technologies manufacturing footprint.
